Postdoctoral Scholars, Scientists, and Fellows

This webpage describes the work/life services and programs available for Postdoctoral Scholars, Scientists, and Fellows. In addition to the programs and services described below, Fellows may feel free to browse the entire website for additional work/life information and resources, but be aware that the specific benefits, services, and programs you are eligible for and which policies apply to you are determined by:

  • your manner of compensation
  • the terms/grade of your appointment

Postdoctoral Scholars and Scientists

Generally speaking, Postdoctoral Scholars and Scientists with a full-time appointment, or who are receiving a salary from Columbia University, are eligible for the same programs, benefits, policies and services as other Officers of Research.

Postdoctoral Research Fellows

If you receive a stipend instead of a salary, either from an external agency or through a Columbia foundation or grant, you may be eligible for:

    If you or your spouse/same-sex domestic partner are planning on having a baby or adopting a child: please be aware that although you may be granted medical leave and/or infant/child care leave, because some granting agencies do not allow an award to continue if there is an interruption in work, the University does not assume an obligation to continue your fellowship stipends during the time you are on leave.

Postdoctoral Clinical Fellows

If you receive a stipend instead of a salary, either from an external agency or through a Columbia foundation or grant, you may be eligible for:

Postdoctoral Residency Fellows

If you are a Residency Fellow at CUMC or another affiliated institution, you:

  • are enrolled in the benefits programs of the affiliated hospital or institute in which you are training.
  • may have to pre-pay part or all of the health insurance premiums, if you are compensated through a stipend from an external agency or grant.

International Postdocs: American Language Program

If you are an International Postdoctoral Clinical or Research Fellow, or Postdoctoral Research Scientist/Scholar and you attend the American Language Program, the Tuition Exemption Benefit Program pays for one course per term. All sessions during the Summer Sessions count as one term. The program does not pay for other courses, or for any courses taken by your children or family members.
