Visiting Scholars and Scientists

This webpage describes the work/life services and programs available for visiting scholars and scientists who do not hold appointments as officers of instruction or research. For a full description of the privileges granted to visiting scholars and scientists please visit the Faculty Handbook.

In addition to the programs and services described below, visiting scholars and scientists may feel free to browse the entire website for additional work/life information and resources.

Family-Friendly Programs

Visiting scholars and scientist are eligible to take advantage of the following family-friendly work/life programs:

Housing Assistance

  • For Non-Columbia Housing:  The Housing Information and Referral Service provides individualized consultations on renting or purchasing apartments and homes within commuting distance of Columbia University campuses.  The service is available to all Columbia University academic and administrative employees, including visitors and faculty being recruited to the University.
  • For Columbia University Housing:  To be considered for Columbia University housing, you should submit a request for housing to the dean of the school which you are visiting. Whether the University will be able to accommodate you will depend on whether there are any housing units available during the period of your visit.

Health Care

Because Visiting Scholars and Scientists do not hold appointments, they are not eligible to participate in any of the University's health plans or health services. Please make sure that you have adequate health insurance coverage that will be effective in New York City before you arrive at Columbia University.
