The Power of Choice: New York City's Programs for English Language Learners

The Division of Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners, the Division of Family and Community Engagement, and the Translation and Interpretation Unit invite all parents and guardians of ELLs in New York City public schools to the first Office of English Language Leaners (OELL) Boroughwide Parent Institute, The Power of Choice: New York City's Programs for ELLs.

This institute is scheduled for the week of March 5–9, 2012 in all five boroughs, with both morning and evening informational sessions. Times and locations are specified below. Each session will include valuable information on the resources and choices that the New York City school system provides to ensure academic success for ELLs. Presenters will highlight the role and rights of parents/guardians in their children’s education and how they can be involved with their school and support the learning process.

Each session will address the address the following questions:

  • How do I know which program is the best for my child?
  • How can I speak to my child’s teachers if English is not my native language?
  • How can I prepare my child for college and beyond? When do I start?
  • How do I build literacy at home?
  • What are Common Core Learning Standards?

Come, listen, learn which resources and choices are available to help ensure academic success for your child and have your questions answered.

Refreshments and MetroCards will be provided. Door prizes will be raffled at each session.

school’s parent coordinator by Tuesday, February 28, 2012.

Please indicate on your registration form if you require interpretation services at the workshop.
