The NYC DOE has announced that high schools will re-open for in-person learning beginning March 22. The approximately 55,000 students who had elected in-person learning this past fall will be eligible to return to their school buildings.
Schedules will vary. It is estimated that 488 high schools will be able to offer in-person learning five days a week for the majority of their students. However, some students who are physically in a classroom may still receive virtual instruction from a teacher who is not in the classroom with them.
Re-opening plans include a requirement for randomized weekly testing of 20% of staff and students. Students who have not already provided consent for testing are required to do so by their first scheduled in-person learning day.
Athletics are also scheduled to resume in April with the season extending through the summer.
