The following information is on organizations and resources outside of Columbia University.

AARP Caregiving Resource Center Includes various articles, videos, and general resources regarding housing options for senior citizens.

The Age-friendly New York City Commission is composed of public and private sector leaders from a wide range of industries, organizations and institutions in New York City who are dedicated to making the city a better place for older adults. There are a variety of reports, research and tools listed on the website that seek to enable older adults to engage with the city in which they live.

Aging.gov is a division of Health and Human Services and has information about programs and services, legal regulations, health issues, and retirement planning.

Plan ahead to age in place with this guide from the National Institute on Aging (NIA).  

Benefits Check-up is a service of the National Council on the Aging and provides an easy online assessment of eligibility and access to the full range of benefit programs. New York City residents may prefer to check the NYC Department on Aging's web page.

BAiP has useful information about continuing to live at home as long as possible. If you or a loved one needs a friendly visit or a helping hand – e.g., assistance with errands, escort to a medical appointment, contact BAiP.

CaringKind NYC is a resource for Alzheimer’s and dementia caregiving. This organization offers a 24-hr Helpline (646) 744-2900 run by professional staff; individual and family counseling sessions with licensed social workers; a vast network of support groups; education seminars and training programs; early stage services and a wanderer’s safety program.

DOROT is located at 171 West 85th Street. It provides in-home services for the frail elderly, including home delivered frozen meals. There are also wellness programs, shopping and escorting services, arts and culture, and holiday celebrations.

Elder Care Locator is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging.  The site offers a searchable list of elder care facilities and organizations.

Leading Age is an association of community-based, nonprofit organizations dedicated to making America a better place to grow old. Their website contains a search tool for senior housing around the United States.  

One of Lily’s projects, “Morningside Village”, is a free-of-charge neighborhood network of volunteers who are helping older seniors live comfortably in their own homes or the home of a loved one as they age. Since 2009, Morningside Village has enlisted a large cadre of volunteers, and it has been offering welcomed help to seniors living in the area bordered by West 105th Street, Riverside Drive, West 122nd Street, and Morningside Drive in Manhattan, a neighborhood where well over a thousand seniors reside.

Medicaid.gov is the official government website for the Medicaid program, including information about how to apply and other coverage plans such as CHIP and the Affordable Care Act.

Medicare.gov is the official government website for everything to do with Medicare, including explanations of what is covered, how to apply, and more.

Morningside Retirement and Health Services, Inc. (MRHS) provides social, health, educational, and recreational programming to the residents of Morningside Gardens located in Morningside Heights on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. 

New York City Advanced Directives offers information about living wills, health care proxies, and more.

The mission of the New York State Association of Area Agencies on Aging is to support and enhance the capacity of New York’s local Area Agencies on Aging and to work in collaboration with the aging network to promote independence, preserve dignity, and advocate on the behalf of aging New Yorkers and their families.

New York State Office of the Aging provides rich information about aging services and supports available in New York for the elderly and caregiver alike including housing options, driver safety information, adult day services, and more. Offices of the Aging are found in all states across the country..

Nursinghomeabuseguide.org seeks to provide a comprehensive free resource to educate the public on the many aspects of nursing home injury and abuse and the steps to take to protect a loved one.  

SPOP is a Manhattan-based non-profit mental health center that works to foster independent living and enhance the quality of life for older adults by providing comprehensive mental health services, advocacy, and education, including: free bereavement support services for adults who have lost a spouse or partner.

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services provides a variety of information about laws and regulations, retirement planning and security, as well as caregiver resources and different types of long-term care.
