Choosing Where to Live

If you are considering a move or are new to New York City, the New York metropolitan area offers a wide range of neighborhoods and communities. With so many options, it can be helpful to start by identifying what matters most to you.

Consider the following factors:

  • Lifestyle: Would you prefer an urban, suburban, or rural setting?
  • Transportation: How important are access to public transportation and commute times? Resources include the MTA, NJ Transit, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
  • Housing costs: Consider your budget and whether you plan to rent or buy. StreetEasy can provide information on NYC housing, while Zillow offers information on suburban markets.
  • Housing type: Consider whether an apartment, condominium, co-op, or single-family home best suits your needs.
  • Schools: If applicable, research public, private, and faith-based K–12 options and associated costs.
  • Community and interests: Consider proximity to family and friends, cultural and entertainment options, houses of worship, parks, hiking trails, and beaches.
  • Starting with these priorities can help narrow your search and identify communities that fit your lifestyle and needs.
